Artful Hotels: Wildflower Farms

My husband and I celebrated a special anniversary at Wildflower Farms in Gardiner, New York this month. There were so many thoughtful details and unique accents throughout the property’s cottages, restaurant, spa, and common areas, that we knew it would make for a perfect “Artful Hotels” feature on the gallery journal.

An expansive 140 acre property in the Hudson Valley, Wildflower Farms is made up of 65 free-standing cottages and a main building complex that houses the hotel’s restaurant, spa, shop, and gathering spaces. These structures, inspired by Swiss & Dutch design traditions and brought to life by the architectural team at Electric Bowery, frame the views of the majestic Shawangunk Ridge to the west.

The property’s indoor spaces were imagined and brought to life by the NY-based interior design firm, Ward & Gray. The palette of the interiors perfectly complements the wildflower meadows and woodlands that make up Wildflower Farms. The common areas and guest rooms all have a very lived-in, collected look, thanks to the combination of antiques sourced by Ward & Gray and the unique details that make up their design scheme, much of it custom designed and made.

From the relaxing guided sound bath meditation to basking in the sunshine by the pool, walking the trails through the woods and along the water, and visiting the farm animals, we had the most wonderful experience soaking up all we could at Wildflower and would jump at the chance to return!

The work on the left is made of preserved plants by artist, Stuart Thornton. Antique rocking chairs in the lobby were reupholstered in Pierre Frey and Brochier prints.

The ceilings are made of planked, reclaimed white oak and add such a warmth to the cabins and cottages.

A favorite detail from our  Meadow cottage was the built-in reading nook next to indoor gas burning stove - the coziest spot  to dive into the novel I brought with me or the stack of garden coffee table books in our room.

The bathroom sconces in the cottages are made in Venice and complement the stormy grey travertine counters.

Ward & Gray designed the custom Bergamot Rug (available on their website) for each of the cottages. The palette was inspired by the outdoor landscape and the rug.

Our cottage's peaceful terrace featured a beautiful view of the ridge and this comfy, custom chaise wide enough for two people to take in the vista.

The open air Great Porch connects the Shop + Spa to the property's restaurant, Clay.

We dined inside Clay for breakfast and dinner and were completely taken with the warmth of the reclaimed wood accents, the potted trees, and upholstered swivel chairs in the rich and lovely Schwarzwald by Dedar.

Ward & Gray elevated their collected and layered look one step further by mixing the patterns throughout the cushions in the lobby to give a quilted look.

Artful Hotels’ is a travel series featuring hotels and inns that place an emphasis on art and design as an integral part of their guest experience. Having the chance to visit different art-filled properties over the years has greatly informed our aesthetic and the way we prefer to travel. These photographs are from our own personal travels.
