Artful Hotels: Troutbeck

Troutbeck is an exquisite country estate in New York’s Dutchess County that dates back to the 18th century and has played host to a variety of beloved artists and writers, not to mention politicians and distinguished historical figures, over the years. With a dedicated space for rotating art exhibits, spot-on interiors throughout by brought to life by renowned firm Champalimaud, and beautiful grounds with lovely, layered gardens, Troutbeck is a hotel with deep creative roots and a strong arts presence.

Collages by artist Duncan Hannah, who splits his time between New York City and nearby West Cornwall, Connecticut, were on view in the property’s gallery and throughout the Manor House during our summer visit. With our dog in tow, we walked the expansive property many times, spending as much time as we could in the Walled Garden and along the banks of the Webatuck Creek.

Our spaniel, Thatcher, loved how dog-friendly the property is and joined us for meals outside and was even allowed to tag along on some of our visits to the pool.

‘Artful Hotels’ is a travel series featuring hotels and inns that place an emphasis on art and design as an integral part of their guest experience. Having the chance to visit different art-filled properties over the years has greatly informed our aesthetic and the way we prefer to travel. These photographs are from our own personal travels.
